How to draw a Crusty Goober

Draw Kevin's Eye-Stalk Goober from How to Draw: Crusty Goobers in six steps, then use the same tricks to invent a Goober of your own.

You need a pencil, an eraser, a black marker and something to color with. Ages 5 and up can do it alone; younger artists can do it with a grown-up.

Draw the Eye-Stalk Goober

In each picture, the black lines are everything drawn so far and the gray lines show what is still to come. Draw lightly in pencil first, then go over your lines in marker at the end.

  1. Step 1 of drawing the Eye-Stalk Goober: eyes and a big mouth
Step 1: Eyes and a big mouth

Draw two small circles with a dot in each for the eyes. Below them, draw a big mouth with a lumpy top lip, wide like a worried frown.

  2. Step 2 of drawing the Eye-Stalk Goober: shoulders
    Step 2: Shoulders

Add a curved line on each side of the mouth for the shoulders. They are where the arms will join on.

  3. Step 3 of drawing the Eye-Stalk Goober: eye rings, teeth and arms
Step 3: Eye rings, teeth and arms

Draw a bigger circle around each eye, two square teeth hanging from the top lip, and a skinny arm reaching out on each side.

  4. Step 4 of drawing the Eye-Stalk Goober: stalks, lip and puddle
Step 4: Stalks, lip and puddle

Start the wrinkly stalks under each eye. Draw the bottom lip across the mouth, and the gooey puddle the Goober sits in.

  5. Step 5 of drawing the Eye-Stalk Goober: finish the crusty bits
Step 5: Finish the crusty bits

Run the stalks down to the head and join them with the top of the head. Add the fingers, then wavy wrinkle lines in the puddle and the mouth.

  6. Step 6 of drawing the Eye-Stalk Goober: fill the mouth
    Step 6: Fill the mouth

Color the inside of the mouth solid black around the teeth. Your Eye-Stalk Goober is finished and ready to color.

Invent your own

Make up a brand new Goober

Goobers can look like anything. Once you have drawn the Eye-Stalk Goober, try building one from scratch.

  1. Squish a blobDraw a wobbly shape for the head and body. Potato, pancake, tower: no straight lines allowed.
  2. Pick the eyesOne, two, five, or on stalks. Make them different sizes and the Goober instantly looks surprised.
  3. Open the mouthWide and toothy, small and worried, or with a tongue flopping out. Gappy teeth are very Goober.
  4. Add the bitsEars, horns, antennae, arms, a hat. Pick one or two so the face still stands out.
  5. Get crustyAdd wrinkles, bumps, freckles and little hair sprigs. This is the step that makes it a Crusty Goober.
  6. Outline thick and colorGo over your best lines with a thick black marker, then color with any colors you like.

Ideas when you get stuck

  • Look at the Goober gallery and borrow one feature from three different Goobers.
  • Use the Roll a Goober dice game to pick the body, eyes, mouth, extras and crust for you.
  • Make it ugly on purpose. Wonky lines are what make a Goober a Goober.
  • Give it a name. Goobers do not come with names, so yours gets to be the first.
